Opening Night Kicks-Off With One of the Best of the Phillip Marlowe Movies.

FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (1975) with Special Guest: Jack O’Halloran, Thursday, May 10, 7:30 pm.

Directed by Dick Richards, Ex-con Moose (Jack O’Halloran) hires private eye Phillip Marlowe (Richard Mitchum) to find his long-lost girlfriend, Velma, a lounge singer. The lounge owner’s wife says she’s dead, but Marlowe remains skeptical.

Meanwhile, Marlowe also goes on a routine ransom exchange for a necklace and gets knocked-out and framed for murder. He eventually finds the necklace’s owner, blonde bombshell Helen Grayle (Charlotte Rampling) but, more importantly, evidence that the two cases are connected. Philip Marlowe is a fictional character created by Raymond Chandler.

Marlowe first appeared under that name in The Big Sleep, published in 1939. Chandler’s early short stories, published in pulp magazines like Black Mask and Dime Detective, featured similar characters with names like “Carmady” and “John Dalmas”.
